The axolotl belongs to the family Ambystomatidae (mole salamanders) and is one of the few species in the genus Ambystoma that exhibits obligate paedomorphosis. Its closest relative is the tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum), with which it can hybridize in captivity.1

Genetic studies suggest that the axolotl diverged from other Ambystoma species around 5 million years ago, and its neoteny likely evolved as an adaptation to the stable, aquatic environment of the high-altitude lakes of Mexico.2

Physical characteristics and neoteny

The axolotl is characterized by its external gills, which resemble feathery branches and are used for respiration, as well as its lidless eyes and wide head.
