Black Hole Recordings

Black Hole Recordings was established in 1997 in Breda, Netherlands, by Arny Bink and Tiësto, who was then rising in the trance scene. The label was created as an outlet for their own productions and those of like-minded artists, quickly becoming a platform for the Dutch trance sound. The first release was "Forbidden Paradise" by Tiësto, a compilation series that had been running since 1994.¹

Black Hole operates several sub-labels, including In Trance We Trust, Magik Muzik, and SongBird. In Trance We Trust was launched in 1998 to focus on uplifting trance, while Magik Muzik (founded 2001) served as Tiësto's personal imprint for his more experimental and progressive works.² SongBird, established in 2000, specializes in chillout and ambient music, releasing compilations like Chillout Sessions.³

Beyond Tiësto, the label has released music by Ferry Corsten, Cosmic Gate, Markus Schulz, and many others. Iconic tracks include "Gouryella" by Gouryella (Ferry Corsten and Tiësto) and "Adagio for Strings" by Tiësto, both released on Black Hole.⁴ The label also issued the In Search of Sunrise compilation series, which became a benchmark for progressive trance.⁵

Black Hole has a lesser-known side: it once released a series of classical music remixes under the name "Classical Trancelations" (2000), blending orchestral pieces with electronic beats.⁶ The label also pioneered digital distribution early, offering tracks on Beatport from its launch in 2004.⁷ In 2010, Tiësto sold his stake to focus on his own label, but Black Hole continued under Bink's leadership, later expanding into a booking agency and artist management.

Black Hole is credited with shaping the trance genre's golden era in the late 1990s and 2000s, influencing countless producers. Its compilation series remain collectible, and the label continues to release new music, adapting to modern EDM trends while preserving its trance roots.²
